The Locale

Some pics of 'the' rooftop in Bangkok and our street here in London.
Londoners were confused by the appearance of a firey yellow ball in the unusually blue sky that day (the only sunny day so far actually).

No the Porsche isn't ours

In other news Kate Smith arrives in London tonight and we are super excited to see her. Also we are finally going to meet up with Fin and Jodie today for a lunch and some champagne (well maybe nor for Marg with all the drugs she's on).

My brother Dan and his lovely girlfriend Luchiana (hope it's spelt correctly) moved into their very own home in Bathurst on Thursday! We are so happy for them and can't wait to visit them for the races in September 07, Andy I'm sure Dan wont mind an extra body or two ;).

Well we're off to house and Job hunt and maybe finally see the inside of an English pub.

Crisis Averted

So after a trip to the local hospital today we have seen the right doctors, got the right drugs and the right treatment and Marg is doing much, much better. The good news is that the doctor said I was doing all the right things looking after her already so no need for Irene and Peter to disown me already ;)

Marg actually enjoyed the hospital as she had no less than 3 nurses and a doctor gushing over her new ring and got to write down "accompanied by: Fiance" on admission the form.

Tomorrow we'll be back to showing some photos from the rooftop in Bangkok where I proposed and hopefully a story or two about meeting up with Jodes and Fin, we may even see some of London!

Love to everyone.

An eventful trip

7 hours before our plane was about to take off:
One minute we were standing at the markets in Bangkok basking in the glow of happiness we have right now, the next Margie can’t see, is breaking out in a cold sweat and is nearly fainting.

Some stand owners helped me take her straight to a hospital near by (a really nice one actually) where she saw a doctor who misdiagnosed her with middle ear problems. He said she was OK to fly and gave her an injection and some tablets for the plane so she could sleep.

We went back to the hotel where Marg slept while I packed and got her some dinner.

We made it to the airport ( I got us a limo as I wasn't having Marg in a taxi feeling like she did) . The lady behind the counter was nice and got us onto an earlier flight that wasn't full and gave us a whole row so Marg could sleep.

We made it to Dubai OK and then going through the transfer security check Marg nearly faints again (It is now apparent that she has the flu I had earlier in our trip) so the security guys call the doctors and we're back in hospital again.

This doctor thinks Marg is dehydrated so gives her some re-hydration powder and sends us on our way again. We grab Margie a lift in a wheelchair which is a great way to get onto a plane first and headed for the UK.

Margie is feeling much better by the time we get to Gatwick and we make it to the place we are staying at in good time (thanks for the directions Jo, they were PERFECT). we fall asleep in 2 hours (4 O'clock in the afternoon) and don't wake up until the next morning.

The next morning Marg has the flu and in full force. So we’ve spent the last two days huddled up in our room with me keeping her temp down and loading her with fluids. She is feeling a bit better now so I have ducked down to Starbucks to send everyone emails and update the blog.

All I have seen of where we are living is the Tescos down the road and this Starbucks, poor Margie hasn't even seen these sights yet but she is on the mend now.

it's been a very eventful few days for us and we hope to catch up with Fin, Chris and Jody tonight or tomorrow night for a champagne (which we haven't had yet!).

Thanks for all the wonderful emails and comments, it makes us realise we really are blessed with wonderful friends and family.

We miss EVERYONE.

Love
Wes

You can see how fast marg was hit. These two photos are only 1.5 hours appart!

The Ring!

With the camera now back in action here are some shots of the ring.

The beautiful box...

The Ring in the box...

Close up of The Ring in the box...

Check out those nails! (But don't mind the mozzy bites on the fingers)

What a beauty!

I am a very luck girl!

More photos of the happy couple coming soon...

BIG news....

That's right - LAST NIGHT WES POPPED THE QUESTION AND WE ARE NOW ENGAGED!!!

We went for a lovely dinner to a stunning roof top restaurant (20 floors up) overlooking steamy Bangkok. The restaurant was surrounded with frangipani trees and fairy lights and we had a beautiful dinner (Huge BBQ Prawns and Cocktails)...

After we had finished eating, Wes started to say all these lovely things to me and before I knew it there was a box sitting in front of me and he ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I of course burst into tears and screamed "YES!!!" to the cheers and congratulations of the other diners in the restaurant!!

IT WAS PERFECT!!!

Wes had a STUNNING ring made for me... it is white gold with a 3.49 carat (OMG) oval cut Thai blue sapphire with four brilliant cut diamonds (two on either side)! It is quite a rock! I feel like a princess!

Needless to say, Wes has made me the happiest woman in the world and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with the most perfect, kind, caring, funny, amazing, wonderful, intelligent, fabulous person in the world.

Don't worry - we have no plans to elope. We are planning to get hitched with all of you in attendance when we get home in a couple of years!

We will take some photos this afternoon and put them up on the website!!

Love,
A Very Happy Margie and Wes :)

Warren's Tale

Well Wazza's trip was a huge success. He turned up in Bangkok a few hours ahead of us so he decides to see some culture and head into town on the train in stead of a taxi. He is sitting next to a monk and some old shoeless guy and winding his way through the slums enjoying the culture and realises he has to actually get somewhere useful so he jumps off the train and is somewhere in Bangkok.

We had given him the name of the hotel (the Tower Inn) and he tries to find it on the map he has. A lady stops him, asks him what he thinks he's doing wandering around without booked accommodation and forces him into a tuk-tuk and the driver agrees to take him to the hotel for 10 baht (too cheap). The guy tries to take him to a temple first, which is much closer but Warren stands firm he wants to go to the Tower Inn. Half way there the  tuk-tuk driver stops off a one of the billion tailors in town who seem to run some sort of tuk-tuk racket and is nearly forced into buying a hand made shirt. Somehow he manages to avoid the salesmen and get back outside where he forces the tuk-tuk driver to take him to the Tower Inn. They arrive at a hotel called the Grand Tower Inn and Warren pays 20 baht (60c) for his troubles, this is double what he agreed but he's just glad to be there.

Warren then decides to give me a call and ask if the hotel is called the Grand Tower Inn, Marg and I are in koh Samui Airport at this stage waiting for our flight and we tell him that the hotel is is fact called the 'Tower Inn' not the Grand Tower Inn. We give him the address and he realises he is on the wrong side of the river.

So he is a little weary of tuk-tuks by this stage and decides to use the hobnail express and walk. Bangkok is not a city where anybody walks anywhere for long. Warren worked this out when he found that there was no way for a pedestrian to cross the river. Feeling a bit trapped Wazza heads hails the nearest bus (an act of utter bravery for someone who has been in the country only 1 hour). So he gets on the bus and can't find anywhere to buy a ticket right away as the doors are in the middle of the bus not at the front near the driver. he eventually finds a lady who looks like she is selling tickets and asks for one across the river. The lady can't speak English (which is fair enough it is her country after all) and she says something to the rest of the passengers who all laugh. So a ticketless Wazza jumps off at the next stop over the river and starts walking to the correct hotel, which is much easier to find with the correct address.

He makes it to the hotel finally and checks in.

We arrive about an hour later and all have a drink in the lobby, we each head off to have a shower in our respective rooms and agree to meet up for a walk to the markets and some dinner.

It was the weekend and the markets had blown out of their usual area and filled the streets around for ages, we all made some purchases and I must say by this stage Marg and I are getting really good at haggling we paid no more than 25% of the asking price for anything. Waz wasn't so good and almost paid $30 for a teeshirt but we helped and we got 2 for $7 instead.

Now Marg decides that we shoud all go and see some girly show as we are in Bangkok afterall. as soon as the words are out of her mouth a guy approaches and leads us to a place called Super Pu$$y. We can't really say a lot of what we saw on the bar on this blog as our families read it but it was very... educational. Warren was propositioned more than a few times and so was Marg! I mustn't have been looking to hot or rich I guess as they stayed away from me ;)

Feeling suitably cultured after 15 minutes and having seen things we can't forget (no matter how hard we try). Luckily we had eaten before the show as we didn't feel like it after ;)

We headed home, on the way I picked up an Aussie Rugby shirt for $5 which I am assured is official. Once back at the hotel 2 drinks of our $3 bottle of Mekong whiskey and we wera all ready for bed.

What a day!

Below arde some photos of warren's stay with us and our trip to the Grand Palace and Emerald Budda Temple.

Note: the silver store at the markets is not where I bought the ring -Wes-

Cameras can't swim...

So it turns out digital cameras don't like it when you go swimming with them in your pocket (oops) so we wont have any photos to show ya'll for a while... Hopefully we can get it fixed in Bangkok and then we will be back on track!

Today is out last day in Koh Phangan... We had a great night out
last night - I had these massive BBQ Prawns that cost $4 and Wes had
an amazing Panang curry that cost $2!

We have to get a ferry tomorrow to Koh Samui then fly to Bangkok where
we are meeting Warren for the weekend which should be great fun.

REMINDER FOR ALL: Only a couple of weeks till Margie's birthday!! (13th August)

Koh Phangan

Well we managed to get a plane on Monday from Phuket to Koh Samui and
then a ferry packed with backpackers to Koh Phangan. The ferry ride
was absolutely beautiful. Everyone had a few beers and chatted as we
watched the sun set in the distance - it was so lovely!

We arrived in Koh Phangan quite late and it was already dark. We
managed to find a bus (which is really just some guys ute that he has
thrown a canopy and a couple planks of wood to sit on in the back) and
with 4 other people took off to Haan Yao beach which is the absolute
other end of the island to where the ferry dropped us.

It was an interesting trip. Our driver stopped half way and went into
a corner store, bought a beer and decided to drink it as he drove us
home!!! Oh well, we made it so it was all good!

The place we are staying is absolutely amazing. We are right on the
beach and have a lovely bungalow as you can see...

Last night we headed out for some drinks on the beach but had to head into the undercover bar due to a massive thunderstorm and another blackout. We met a couple of other Aussies and some German chicks and all ended up having dinner together. Here is a piccie of us after a couple too many Mekong Whiskies (thanks for putting us onto them Tom!)

Miss you all!

Last night in Phuket

Well our last night in Phuket was special as it was our first real night out in Phuket (after having spent 5 of the 7 nights in bed, curse you Bird Flu).

We decided to be crazy and have a huge expensive seafood meal as the sun went down over Patong Beach.

First we got dolled up and jumped in one of the funky new Daihatsu Tuk-tuks and headed into town.

We found a great resturant and Margie picked the seafood

So back packing, you spend a fortune (au$50) on dinner very rarely but when you spend that much here you get...

...all this. A whole lobster cooked in garlic and pepper and 2 MASSIVE tiger prawns fried in chilli, a salad bar and fried rice! I don't think this weight we've lost is going to stay gone for long.
So long.

Sunsets over the beaches...

So finally we get to experience Patong Beach and we leave tomorrow.
There really are no tourists here now and the people seem a little desperate to get you into their shop, tuk-tuk, resort, whatever.

We went to post our postcards yesterday and at the post office there are postcards of the Tsunami. Fair enough it was a major event, you might think, why not show people a picture of a big wave. That would be great if it were the case but these postcards show dead bodies washing up on shore, floating in water and drying in the streets. It's a bit full-on to send home with "Wish you were here" on the back!

After having a walk down the main drag Bang La Rd in the afternoon we poked our heads out to the beach and were greeted to the most stunning sunset over the beach. It was the first time for both of us seeing the sunset on a western coastline and it was beautiful!

Also A big shout goes out to Chris and Kim up in (or 'down in' from where we're standing) Lismore. Looks like they have everyone elses water right now and don't particularly want it. Hope you guys are OK and we're thinking of you.

Our next leg of our journey begins tomorrow with a trip back to Koh Samui then on a ferry to Koh Pha-agan. We stay there for a few days and then it's off to Bangkok where we meet up with Warren! Woo Hoo. It will be great to see a familiar, friendly face. For those who don't know Waz has been doing top secret work for Microsoft in Singapore for the last couple of months. We both look forward to catching up soon.

Also we got to speak to Mikey today as the phone gods finally let our lines meet. We desperatly look forward to catching up again in London for his birthday in August.

Finally a Big WELL DONE to Mr Andrew Fairley for passing his Masters in Economics I understand he even got a credit in the final exam. Nice one Fairley!

Love to all

Asian Bird Flu: 0, Wesley: 1

So poor Margie has spent the last 4 days locked in our hotel room looking after me. we have seen a sum total of 1 block of Phuket so far and we are at the quiet end so there is not much happening within 1 block of the hotel. But we're back and the Asian Bird Flu or whatever I had has mostly gone now, so we're off to explore a bit today.

Keep writing emails we love getting them

We're in Phuket

Well we made it to Phuket, which much to my disgust is not pronounced 'fukett' at all. We will take some photos and post them soon. The sure haven't fully recovered from the Tsunami just yet.

What a day...

Today we spent the day on an organised tour. It was brilliant. We started at 7:30 by heading to the north of the island and jumping in a speed boat after an hour we arrived at our first stop for some snorkelling. It was the first really sunny day in the last few so it felt great to get into the water.

From there we went to another island, up a very steep climb and saw a beautiful green lagoon in the center of the island. We nearly had a heart attack getting to the top but the view was worth it. afterward we headed back down to have a closer look. Swiming just under the viewing platform was a small (6 foot) shark but he dissappeared before we could see him.

After the climb and busting for the loo we headed for a short boat ride over to our lunch venue. The village, as shown, was VERY authentic complete with fishermen asleep in their hammocks. The lunch area was beautiful and clean and the food was good (the deep fried prawns and sweet chilli sauce particularly so).
Next it was off to our sea Kayaking adventure.

The Kayaks left from a beautiful beach (this is incidently the only photo we are willing to show of us in swimmers) and off around some of the typically Thai islands. Marg and I actually completed the circut first (believe it or not) and tomorrow we will both need a good massage. I think we'll swing the $6 it costs for 1 hour ;) In the background you can see a big storm brewing, noticing this our guide grabbed us and we headed back to Koh Samui as fast as we could.

Once back on shore we jumped onto the Koh Samui mass transit system (the back of a ute) and headed for an elephant sanctuary to ride the big fellas! Holy crap! Wes got to ride on the elepahnt bare back and Marg was treated like the Queen of Sheeba. It was amazing, the elephant's skin is so warm and the hair on its head is so ruff, she was a beautiful 45 year old girl and we had to feed her some bananas when we got off to say thanks.
(as you can see this was a lucky elephant as it's trunk is up ;)

Well that should do for today we returned home to this view from our hotel and more than ready for bed.

What a Game!

So, we were walking home after yesterday's update and as we pass a local bar we hear the strains of the Australian national anthem coming from within. Hand on heart we entered the pub, being the patriotic citezens we are it would have been rude not to (plus we were stinging for a beer). We walked in to find that the State of Origin decider was being shown LIVE.

We grabbed a seat and a Tiger as fast as we could. The atmosphere was brilliant as every Aussie for miles around slowly packed their way into the bar to watch.

Initially there were lots of QLDers cheering but 15 minutes in it was all NSW! It was a bit of a non-event game being so one-sided but it was great to see the NSW guys come from behind. Also it was the first night Marg and I have been drunk since arriving in Thailand. I know, I know it doesn't sound like us but we've been really good and too tight to pay for beer. But with 3 beers in us we were trashed! We walked out grinning and went to find some arse blasting Thai curry for dinner...

Rancho Relaxo

We have hit peak relaxation mode. Today we did absoutley nothing and loved every minute of it. After lounging on the beach, reading books and taking a few dips in the beautiful Gulf of Thailand, we had a fabulous Pad Thai Goong for $2 and then had a long walk along the beach.

Have decided to buy a few Singa Beers from the 7/11 for $1 each and order some room service tonight. We love backpacking.

Photos!

Here we have an image of the street next to our first hotel 'The Asia Bangkok' there was great food and interesting smells here.

The floating markets... Wow!

The cobra show was great, kept hoping the guy would get bit though. he nearly did here

The elephant show was brilliant. Did you know an elephant can do a hand stand?

This is backpacking Margie style!

Beautiful Lamui Beach before a storm.

Koh Samui

So we arrived yesterday at sunny Koh Samui, the holiday has begun in earnest now and of course we are already sunburnt.

After checking out our surroundings and walking down the white sand beach we relaxed with a quick swim and a nap at the resort. We awoke and feeling a little hungry we headed for the main strip to find some food.

Thailand seems to really come to life at night the place was a hive of activity, lights, cars and people from all over the world. We thought we might just have a peak at the beach at night time before we ate and it had completely transformed. Gone were the deck chairs with fat Poms and Germans and in their place were magical resturants surrounded by fairy lights with chairs right down to the warm waters edge.

We were captivated and decided to eat at the first one we saw. We picked our dinner from a selection of fresh seafood and decided on having 1 prawn each for dinner. The prawns were called jumbo river prawns and we have never seen a bigger prawn in our lives! They filled our entire plate and were cooked in black pepper and garlic served with fried rice and vegies. Our mouths are watering again typing this now...

So today has all been about lounging on the beach working on our tans. The weather today is HOT and we haden't spent long in the sun before we wanted to explore the island. We almost got stuck in the middle of our little bay as we went for a low tide walk but everything came out good in the end.

Tonight we hope to catch a Thai Boxing match after dinner.

Tomorrow we are heading south to another beach called Lamui for 7 nights should be just as fantastic..

Miss you all.

Day 2... WOW

So we are now in Bangkok Domestic Airport about to fly down to Koh Samui.

We LOVED Bangkok. At first it was all a bit much for us as we where ripped off by everyone.. but yesterday we went on a day tour and then headed out to the night markets which was amazing. Marg spent all her money within the first two stalls... but we had fun. We had dinner from a street vendor and for about $1.20 had the best Pad Thai we have ever had.

The tour was so much fun... apart from the fact that they forgot to pick us up from our hotel. We where waiting in the lobby for 1.5 hours and where getting pretty worried. We called the travel agent in Bangkok who said they would be there in 10 minutes as they where stuck in traffic (a usual storty for Bangkok). Anyway, this guy in a dodgy minivan picked us up and we met up with the rest of our group at the floating markets which was fabulous but chaotic. From there we went to the Bangkok Cobra Show (very educational - did you know a Cobra has two penises - well we have seen them both!) and then to the Elephant Zoo and Crocodile Wrestling Show.

We where about done with seeing so much animal cruetly by this stage, so then went to a Handicraft Market and a DIAMOND FACTORY!!!! (I swear to god I didnt even know it was on the tour!!!! - Marg) It was the largest Jewellry store in the world (they claim) and there was a lot of bling bling!!!! (A bit out of our budget unfortunatley)

Anywho... now we are off to a beautiful resort on the beach in Koh Samui for some relaxing in the sun for a couple of weeks. Life is sweet :)

Miss you all.

Marg and Wes
