Back in London and out for Wes' Birthday

To keep the month of celebrating Wes' birthday going, we decided to head out to The Porterhouse in Covent Garden for zome drinkies. Somehow we ended up at a gay club in Soho which was very educational. They certainly did know how to pole dance there!

1) The flattys - Wes, Damien, Melinda & Nigel. 2) Armgard & Marg

3) Fin & Wes. 4) Jodes & Georgie

5) Wes about to do a shot of tequila - bad!. 6) Wes & Damien at the gay club

The great invite that Fin put together for the night. (Nice one Fin)

Egypt Day 6: Alexandria & Cairo + Wes' Birthday!

On our last day in Egypt we decided on a last minute trip to the coastal town of Alexandria and it was well worth the trip. We had a look through the Roman Catacombs before dipping our toes in the Mediterranean and enjoying some sun.

We then found an incredibly dodgy yet fabulous seafood 'restaurant' in the side streets and absolutely gorged ourselves on fish, calamari, prawns and octopus. Yum!

After digesting we headed to the famous Library of Alexandria. We looked at some very old books and were impressed by the beautiful architecture.

To celebrate our last night in Egypt and Wes' birthday, we headed out to the Marriott in Cairo (very la de da) with Matt and Lee, two blokes we met on the tour who are a great laugh. We proceded to have many a cocktail and shisha pipe (don't worry Mum - it was only Apple Tobacco and I didn't inhale). It was a great night out until we all realized we had no idea where we were staying and our poor taxi driver was stuck with 7 drunks in the back of the cab all yelling directions!

3) Jodie & Marg 'not' inhaling

Egypt Day 5: Valley of the Kings & Queens

After another early start we headed into the Valley of the Kings. We went inside 4 tombs including King Tut's. His tomb was special not only because we had all studied it for so long from so sar away but because he is still buried there.

We then explored the Valley of the Queens where the art on the walls was much better preserved as there are fewer visitors.

our last stop was the temple of Queen Hachepsut.

Then it was back to the hotel for lots more sunbaking and a night out on the town for some great Egyptian food. It was about then that the sun stoke hit me - we have really turned into Poms...

Congratulations Katie & Rob!

Mens hearts all over the world broke this week when one of our dearest friends Katie Smith announced her engagement to her man Rob!

Wes was one of them - he is pretty upset that his 'back up wife' is now off the market...

But in all seriousness, Wes and I could not be happier for you Katie. We wish you and Rob all the happiness in the world and look forward to another wedding and seeing you soon!

Looks like marriage is the new black!

Egypt Day 4: Trains & Temples

Day four is yet another huge day. We arrived in Luxor by sleeper train from Cairo at 4am. No one looks good at 4am (especially me as you can see below). We arrived at our beautiful new hotel and went straight up to bed.

After a sleep we headed into town to see the temple of Karnak, the most visited site in Egypt. The temple is actually a complex of many temples built over many dynasties. The majority was built by Rameses II.

This was one of the highlights of our trip. The temple was so large that we saw only a small part of it and we are determined to go back.

After the temple we headed back to the hotel for a bit of sun soaking and a swim. This was another highlight of the trip as we haven't been able to leave the house in less that 2 jackets for what seems like the last 18 months.

During the evening we took a horse and cart ride down to the Luxor Temple. It was originally attached to the Karnak Temple by a 3Km avenue of sphinxes. We visited the temple at night as it was all lit up and the effect was was stunning as you can see below.

Egypt Day 3: Pyramids, More Pyramids and Camels

Keen for some more Pyramid action we got up very early on day three and headed out to our first up close, for real Pyramid. The Stepped Pyramid.

After hanging around the amazing Stepped Pyramid we headed over to another smaller pyramid for our first trip into a pyramid. As with most of the tombs you aren't allowed to take photos inside in order to preserve the tomb in the best possible way.
It was hot and cramped under the tomb but well worth it. We went down more than 20 meters and saw the burial chamber.

Next we traveled back to the big pyramids including the only surviving member of the 'Seven Wonders of the Ancient world' the Great Pyramid of Giza. Interestingly it's only the big one that is a wonder the others didn't make the cut.

After spending a few hours clambering over the Great Pyramid and it's smaller cousins we were able to go inside for a look. We went into the second pyramid (the one still with some of the limestone casing on top). It was HOT from being filled with sweating tourists all day and it was also cramped but well worth it.

Next we all jumped on some camels and went for a wander around the pyramids.

The Pyramids were incredible and so was the Sphinx. It was awe inspiring to see them all firsthand and up so close. The size of them is incomprehensible until you are actually there. We have even more photos to put up and will add them later but for now stay tuned for day 4.
